Kuman Thong are a special class of spiritual entities in the animist spirit world of Southeast Asia . Kuman Thong itself refers to the spirit of an infant; i.e. a baby ghost. These mystic child spirits are believed to dwell in eerie places, such as graveyards, dense forests, haunted sites, etc.

Likewise, they like to occupy uninhabited houses and apartments, where they can play freely without any other people around. Some of them, however, prefer to stay in or near inhabited places or occupied residences in order to find themselves a foster parent and/or a playmate. Conversely, people can also adopt a Kuman Thong spirit into their family by keeping an amulet or Kuman Thong effigy.

The popularity of Kuman Thong can be traced to the Ayutthaya period, and myths and superstitions have followed them throughout the centuries.

Kuman Thong were famously mentioned in The Tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen folklore, set in the late 1500s. In the story, Khun Phaen made an amulet out of his child’s foetus by performing a black magic ritual. The unborn child then became a ghost called Kuman Thong, or “golden boy”. The folklore said Khun Phaen used the Kuman Thong for his protection on the battlefield. These days, it is believed the Kuman Thong will bring good fortune. Kuman Thong is commanded to increase Wealth and Lucky Fortunes, and forewarn of danger. Protect the household and its treasures, and to help improve business. etc.
